Overview

Hypoglycemia is an abnormally low level of blood glucose (also called blood sugar). It’s a serious condition for people who have diabetes. Severe hypoglycemia, if not treated immediately, can be life-threatening.

What is Blood Glucose?

Blood glucose is produced during digestion when the body breaks down carbohydrates. It is carried through the bloodstream to the body’s cells. The hormone insulin unlocks the cells and allows the glucose to enter, where it can be used for energy. But in people who have diabetes, this process does not work properly. Hypoglycemia occurs when the body quickly uses up the glucose in the bloodstream.

Causes

In people who have diabetes, this can be caused by taking too much insulin. It can also result from not eating enough, or by exercising more than normal.

Symptoms

Hypoglycemia symptoms are many, and vary from person to person. It can cause shakiness, nervousness, sweating and irritability. It can cause rapid heartbeat, lightheadedness, weakness and headache. It can cause confusion and strange behavior. A person who is experiencing hypoglycemia may become angry, stubborn or sad. It can also cause vision problems, hunger, nausea and tingling or numbness of the lips and tongue.

Symptoms

A TN attack may last from a few seconds to a few minutes. People describe the pain as like a sudden burn or an electric shock, typically felt on only one side of the face. It’s an incredibly intense sensation that can be physically incapacitating.

Treatment

In its early stages, hypoglycemia can be treated by getting glucose or carbohydrates into the body. The person can drink some soda or juice, or eat something sweet like raisins, honey or candy. The person can take glucose tablets.

Complications

Without treatment, hypoglycemia will worsen. The person may have a seizure and may lose consciousness. This is a medical emergency. The person needs an injection of glucagon. Glucagon is available in kits for this situation. Without proper treatment, severe hypoglycemia can be fatal.
